Description
Brand history:
The spirit of Grosperrin cognacs lies in the desire to authentically showcase the heritage of the Charente region. Guilhem Grosperrin, a true cognac craftsman, travels throughout the appellation each year in search of exclusive batches and family heirlooms. In their restored 19th-century cellar in Saintes, the cognacs are nurtured like unique works of art, faithfully reflecting a terroir, a specific plot of land, a vintage, and a story.
Where some blend batches from different origins to create quality products, Cognacs Grosperrin crafts intrinsically unique and rare cognacs, recognizable among all others.
Manufacturing method:
This vintage cognac comes from a small estate founded in 1930 by the father of the widow of the winemaker (who passed away in 2009) from whom we purchased this batch. Located in the commune of Sainte-Sévère, the estate lies on the border between the Fins Bois and Borderies wine regions, on clay-siliceous soil with flint. Originally from farming backgrounds, this family has always successfully combined livestock breeding, agriculture, and viticulture. Lacking a still, this winemaker sent his wines each year to a professional distiller located a few kilometers from his farm for distillation. Due to limited resources and a crisis in demand, the eaux-de-vie were aged at ORECO in very dry cellars (this cognac had an alcohol content of 67.5% before reduction), where we found them after more than 40 years of aging. The year 1980 is etched in the memories of Cognac for its very small harvest, and the great cold that accompanied the harvest (the "harvest in mittens", down to -10° C!).
Nose: Floral and taut, spicy notes, mahogany wood, warm flint, a noble touch.
Palate: Lively and mineral, fruity and dry, very clear and elegant.
Finish: Long and peppery, rancio in formation, typical complexity of old Fins Bois.
