A family business founded in the 1990s by Jean Grosperrin, and now run by his son Guilhem and his sister Axelle, Cognac Grosperrin embodies the very essence of the cognac merchant-producer profession as it was practiced in the 18th century.

Description

Brand History:

The spirit of Grosperrin cognacs is based on the desire to bear witness to the Charente heritage without artifice. Guilhem Grosperrin, a true cognac artisan, travels the appellation's lands each year in search of confidential lots and family heirlooms. In their restored 19th-century cellar in Saintes, the cognacs are aged as unique works, faithfully reflecting a terroir, a plot, a vintage, and a history.
Where some blend batches from different origins to create quality products, Grosperrin Cognacs craft intrinsically unique and rare cognacs, recognizable among all.

Manufacturing Method:

This cognac comes from an auction held in January 2019 to benefit Doctors of the World and Action Against Hunger. These cognacs were donated to these two associations by André Bertandeau, a winemaker in Salignac-sur-Charente, who died in December 2016. Deported as part of the STO to Germany in 1942, at the age of 20, to the Buchenwald and Dora camps, he suffered the worst deprivations during his deportation, and endured inhumane treatment initiated in the name of nationalist and racist ideals. Luckily, he managed to survive until the camp's liberation in 1945. Back home, to the family estate, he regularly testified about what he had seen and experienced, hoping that history "does not stutter." He gave the meager profits from his small property to charities throughout his life and, upon his death, he bequeathed all of his assets, property, vineyards and stocks, to these NGOs in order to help those suffering from wars and deportation. Deeply touched by the story, by the humanity and discretion of this man (who had not imagined that his donation could be considered important, and who had not deemed it useful to inform these associations), as well as by the quality of his eaux-de-vie, we bought a large part of his stock.

Nose: Candied fruits of great elegance, dried mango, complex floral bouquet with faded rose and warm mineral.
Palate: Chiseled and straight attack, controlled tannic density, impression of calm and intense maturity.
Finish: Long and refined, expressing a remarkable balance between power and finesse.

Directions for use

Best enjoyed neat at room temperature (18–20°C), with a splash of water, chilled with whisky stones or ice cubes to provide slight dilution.
