A family business founded in the 1990s by Jean Grosperrin, and now run by his son Guilhem and his sister Axelle, Cognac Grosperrin embodies the very essence of the cognac merchant-producer profession as it was practiced in the 18th century.

Description

Brand history:

The spirit of Grosperrin cognacs lies in the desire to authentically showcase the heritage of the Charente region. Guilhem Grosperrin, a true cognac craftsman, travels throughout the appellation each year in search of exclusive batches and family heirlooms. In their restored 19th-century cellar in Saintes, the cognacs are nurtured like unique works of art, faithfully reflecting a terroir, a specific plot of land, a vintage, and a story.
Where some blend batches from different origins to create quality products, Cognacs Grosperrin crafts intrinsically unique and rare cognacs, recognizable among all others.

Manufacturing method:

This cognac comes from an auction held in January 2019 to benefit Doctors of the World and Action Against Hunger. These cognacs were donated to these two organizations by André Bertandeau, a winegrower in Salignac-sur-Charente, who passed away in December 2016. Deported to Germany in 1942, at the age of 20, under the STO (Forced Labor Service), to the Buchenwald and Dora concentration camps, he suffered the worst deprivations during his deportation and endured inhumane treatment perpetrated in the name of nationalist and racist ideals. By sheer luck, he managed to survive until the camp's liberation in 1945. Returning home to the family estate, he regularly bore witness to what he had seen and experienced, hoping that history would not repeat itself. Throughout his life, he donated the meager profits from his small property to charities, and upon his death, he bequeathed all his assets—property, vineyards, and stock—to these NGOs to help those suffering from war and deportation. Deeply moved by this man's story, his humanity, and his discretion (he hadn't imagined his donation would be considered significant and hadn't deemed it necessary to inform these organizations), as well as by the quality of his eaux-de-vie, we purchased a large portion of his stock.

Nose: Elegant candied fruits, dried mango, complex floral bouquet with faded rose and warm minerality.
Palate: Chiseled and direct attack, controlled tannic density, impression of calm and intense maturity.
Finish: Long and refined, expressing a remarkable balance between power and finesse.

Directions for use

Best enjoyed neat at room temperature (18–20°C), with a splash of water, chilled with whisky stones or ice cubes to provide slight dilution.
